Gateway's athletics program is a natural extension of the school's curriculum and provides activities for the physical and mental development of our student body. We believe that participation in sports can-and play a significant role in preparing our students for becoming productive, contributing citizens of our community and society. Our goals are to:
− Develop leadership skills and self-discipline
− Instill proper attitudes toward winning and losing, success and failure
− Inspire and always hold respect for fellow athletes
− Improve skill sets specific to sport
− Teach an understanding of the value of teamwork and an appreciation of the relationship between investment and reward
− And to excel on the field of play
Candidates must have extensive playing experience (collegiate or professional preferred) and/or previous coaching experience in high school or college as well as good management and communication skills in person (with kids and parents) and over phone and email. Requirements also include:
− Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination (as required by SFUSD for all persons working at public high schools)
− Availability during after-school hours M-F and some Saturdays during season of sport
− Valid drivers license, negative TB test and LiveScan fingerprinting
− CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to become certified)
Head Coaches must also complete the following courses, completion of which may take place after hiring and which Gateway’s Athletics Department will sponsor:
− NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching, First Aid & Safety for Coaches, Concussion Awareness & Sport-Specific Training
Stipends for each position vary by level and sport.e
As noted above, Fall seasons start on August 8th, 2022 and Winter seasons start October 31st, but we are looking to fill these positions and to introduce our coaches to our kids as soon as possible. Summer/Offseason programs are optional (based on coach's preference) and can begin as soon as June 1st.
