The Gateway Public Schools' Board of Trustees approved a resolution last week that explains what steps Gateway will take to protect the privacy and rights of immigrant, and all, students, in light of the current political developments around immigration.
The resolution states that all students have the right to attend school regardless of their immigration status and declares Gateway Public Schools a "Safe Zone" for its students.
The measure affirms Gateway's existing policy of complying with federal law barring school officials from releasing students' immigration status. Gateway Public Schools staff will continue to maintain the confidentiality of student records and personally identifiable information of students, alumni, families and employees to the fullest extent provided by the law.
Gateway Public Schools believes that all students have the right to learn and achieve, and refuses to accept anything less than an excellent college-preparatory education for all of its students.
