Our Results

Since opening Gateway High School in 1998, our dedication to preparing each one of our students, regardless of race, income, or learning style, for success in college and in life has not wavered. Over the years, we have achieved remarkable results due to the collective efforts of our community, faculty, students, parents, and supporters. Our history of success gave us the motivation, and earned us the support, to expand our model and open the doors of Gateway Middle School in 2011.

Special Highlights:

Gateway High School is currently one of seven schools featured on the U.S. Department of Education’s Doing What Works website under the Adolescent Literacy area.

Gateway High School was named one of Newsweek’s 2010 Best Public High Schools. Only 6% of all public schools in the U.S. made the list.

San Francisco School Volunteers named Gateway High School 2009 School of the Year because of the success and broad community support of Gateway’s vibrant after-school tutoring program.

SF Board of Education renewed Gateway High School’s 5-year charter unanimously in 2009, with all seven board members lauding Gateway's achievements.

Gateway High School was named a California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education twice, first in 2003 and again in 2007. Each year only 2% of California public schools receive this designation, and Gateway High School was the first charter high school in the state to receive this distinction two times.

In Students First, a report released in 2007 by the Governor’s Committee on Education Excellence report, Gateway High School was one of four schools named in the section Getting the Job Done, despite an overall dismal picture of California’s public schools.

Gateway High School’s success in closing the achievement gap was cited in an amicus brief that was presented to the Supreme Court in 2006 by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Gateway High School was one of eight exemplary schools nationwide in the U.S. Department of Education's 2006 publication titled Innovations in Education: Charter High Schools Closing the Achievement Gap.

The Stanford School of Education, demonstrating their belief that Gateway’s instruction, culture, and design exemplify what is needed to prepare students for success in the 21st century, selected Gateway in 2006 as one of six Partner Professional Development Schools.

Gateway’s College Counseling Program was honored as a model of school reform excellence, having achieved measurable results for traditionally underserved students, by the Rossier School of Education at University of Southern California in 2006.

Gateway High School was selected as a school that exemplifies success for raising academic achievement for African-American and Latino students in the UCLA independent evaluator's 2005 report of SFUSD's desegregation efforts.

Key Stats

96% of our graduates have gone to college, double the statewide rate.

98% of our graduates were accepted to college in 2011 and 80% of these students were accepted to a four-year college.

91% of our alumni report feeling prepared or very prepared for the rigors of college.

Between 2007-2010, 95% of our graduates met the course requirements for entrance to the University of California and California State University systems. During the same period, only 35% of students graduating from California high schools met these requirements.
